How to Turn Your Sprinklers On

It’s that time of year again – time to get your lawn and garden ready for the warm weather ahead by turning on your sprinkler system. While it may seem like a simple task, there are some important steps to take to ensure your sprinklers are working properly and efficiently. A little preparation now can save you hassle and headaches down the road.
Before you turn on your sprinklers for the first time this season, take a walk around your property and inspect each sprinkler head. Clear away any dirt, debris, or overgrowth that may be obstructing the spray. Damaged or missing sprinkler heads should be replaced.
Once the sprinkler heads are clear, it’s time to slowly open the main valve and allow water to enter the sprinkler system. Go slowly to prevent damage from a sudden surge of high-pressure water.
Next, one zone at a time, manually turn on each valve to check that water is flowing properly through the system. As each zone turns on, check every sprinkler in that zone. Make sure sprinklers are upright and spraying in the intended direction. Adjust or replace any that are leaking, spurting, or spraying in the wrong direction.
If a zone doesn’t turn on, there may be an electrical problem with the valve solenoid or wiring. Visually inspect valve wires for damage and make any needed repairs. A volt-ohm meter can help troubleshoot wiring issues.
With the sprinklers activated, look for any areas of dry landscape that may indicate clogged nozzles or lack of coverage. Again, make adjustments as needed to ensure even watering.
This is also a good time to evaluate your sprinkler timer settings. Update the watering schedule as needed for the current weather and season. Ensure your system is programmed to follow any local watering regulations and restrictions.
Consider upgrading older sprinkler timers to a smart controller that automatically adjusts watering based on local weather and landscape conditions. Soil moisture sensors are another great way to conserve water by ensuring your lawn is only watered when needed.
Proper sprinkler maintenance is key to a lush, healthy landscape. Investing some time in sprinkler start-up will pay off in water savings and a beautiful lawn and garden you can enjoy all season long.
Remember, your sprinkler system is the circulatory system of your landscape. Regular tune-ups keep it running smoothly. Be sure to repeat your sprinkler inspection monthly throughout the watering season, and schedule professional checks at least once a year. With proper care, your sprinklers will keep your outdoor space green and growing for years to come.
